How to photograph a receipt that is easy to validate

Four simple checks that help keep every item, date and total readable.

Place the receipt on a flat, evenly lit surface and photograph it from directly above. The full receipt should sit inside the frame with a small margin around every edge.

Check that the retailer, purchase date, eligible product and total are readable before submitting. Reflections, deep shadows and motion blur can make an otherwise complete receipt difficult to validate.

One clear image is better than several cropped images. If the receipt is long, move the camera higher rather than cutting off the top or bottom.
